Mark Howell

Co-Founder · Deputy Clinical Lead · CBT & EMDR Therapist

Mark Howell has more than fifteen years’ experience working in mental health services across the NHS. He currently serves as a Deputy Clinical Lead within West London NHS Trust, where he is responsible for clinical leadership, research development, staff supervision, and training. In this role, Mark supports NHS teams working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and plays a key part in developing services that are compassionate, evidence-based, and accessible to the people who need them most.

Throughout his career, Mark has worked with adults experiencing a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties. His clinical experience covers anxiety, depression, trauma, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress, burnout, body dysmorphia, low self-esteem, and long-term health conditions. He also has experience supporting people adjusting to significant life changes or managing the emotional impact of chronic physical illness.

Mark’s approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and grounded in scientific evidence. He specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), two of the most effective, research-supported methods for addressing anxiety, depression, and trauma. Alongside these core approaches, Mark draws on a range of additional therapies, tailoring his work to each person’s individual needs and goals. He is trained in Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), and integrates these approaches to help clients build resilience, self-compassion, and lasting emotional change.

A large part of Mark’s professional life has been dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of other clinicians. He provides supervision and mentoring to CBT therapists and trainee clinical psychologists, helping them develop both confidence and clinical skill in their practice. His leadership role within the NHS also includes overseeing research programmes and developing innovative ways of improving therapy outcomes for clients living with complex or long-term difficulties.

Mark works from the belief that everyone brings their own story, values, and strengths to therapy. His role is to help clients understand what keeps them stuck, identify what matters most to them, and find new ways to move forward with greater balance and self-understanding. He aims to create a therapeutic space that feels safe, reflective, and empowering—somewhere clients can begin to make sense of their experiences and reconnect with hope and direction.

He has extensive experience delivering therapy to adults across a wide range of age groups and backgrounds, including people managing difficulties such as panic disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, perfectionism, insomnia, chronic fatigue, complex trauma, and stress related to work or family life. He also offers specialist support for individuals experiencing perinatal mental health concerns, such as perinatal anxiety, depression, or adjustment difficulties.

Mark’s therapeutic work is informed by his long history in IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services, where he contributed to the design and evaluation of treatment programmes and led on training and supervision for multidisciplinary teams. His focus has always been on ethical, recovery-oriented care that combines compassion with clinical rigour.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mark continues to be actively involved in service research and development, contributing to initiatives that aim to improve how psychological therapies are delivered within NHS settings.

Mark is an accredited member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and has held this accreditation since 2016. His professional experience reflects his ongoing commitment to high-quality, evidence-based psychological care.

He is a specialist in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), with additional training in:

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
Supervision for CBT & BCT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
